Amber Machado
Painting

My name is Amber Machado, and I am a landscape painter from Lexington, SC.  I began painting as a teenager, hoping to emulate my older siblings and father who have always been my biggest artistic role models. It took nearly a decade of painting sporadically before my personal relationship with art began. Growing up, I took art for granted. I grew up in a house where artistic expression was not only encouraged, it was a major fixture in our lives. It wasn’t until I desperately needed it that I fell in love with art. Today, art is my lifeline. It allows me to cope with a chronic illness that has tested every part of me. Before Lupus, I painted without much purpose. Now, I paint with a fierce desperation to reclaim my life.

At the onset of my symptoms, painting became a way for me to distract myself from the physical and emotional pain I was experiencing. Art quickly evolved from a welcomed distraction to a safe asylum and source of hope during the darkest season of my life. Creativity was and still is the fire inside of me that keeps me going. Through art and creative expression I have learned that even on the days when I am feeling my absolute worst, I can still create something beautiful and unique.

Over the last three years my aim has been to develop new skills and grow as an artist. My main area of focus is landscapes, primarily watercolor. I am greatly inspired by nature, natural light and color. When I’m not painting I am playing Barbie’s with my daughter, dancing with my cats or pestering my spouse.

Artist Carlos Bilal is a native of Columbia, South Carolina, he’s self-taught painter. His inspiration comes from traveling abroad as an airmen in the U.S. Air Force. Also, being an 80’s kid, he was influence by Saturday morning cartoons, 1980’s hip-hop, and sneaker culture. Being color blind, Carlos find uncanny ways to coordinate hues, tints, shades, and tones. Currently residing in the Low Country, he can be seen painting and selling art at the famous Charleston City Market and the Charleston Night Market. Mr. Bilal now get his inspiration from the geechee/gullah culture, beaches and the architecture of Charleston’s traditional homes.

Becky with the Good Wares
Fiber Arts/Textiles

Becky with the Good Wares has been my passion project since May 2023, when I started selling my bags, but I’ve been making professional-grade bags since September 2021. While I’d sold other crafts—quilts, mostly—at craft fairs since 2012, my first fair as Becky With the Good Wares was in November 2023, and I’ve loved doing them ever since! I work with my daughter, Zoey, and her subsection of the company, Chaotic Good Librarian. She sells some fabric items, like book sleeves, but she mostly focuses on 3D printed items. Her hot sellers are fidget toys and miniature books that serve as book trophies that are displayed on her miniature bookshelves.
